Learning about digital footprints

Douglas Elementary School is committed to keeping students safe online. For the past few weeks in the Media Center, students have been focusing on digital citizenship lessons. For example, fifth grade students recently discussed the topic of digital friendships and kindergarten students learned about the importance of media balance.  Media specialist Shannon Petty stated, “Digital Citizenship is a topic that I am very passionate about. It is critical for our students to learn how to be safe online, know how to balance screen time, to understand what’s okay and not okay to share online and how to deal with cyberbullying.”                                                 Parents must also be proactive at home by checking ratings on apps, setting parental controls and finding media that is age appropriate. is a great website for families to learn more about how they can keep their children safe online. The online world can be a scary place, but with the right education, mindset, and values instilled in our children, they can use it to their benefit to learn new things and access information efficiently.
