I am the "I" in KIND

Douglas Elementary School is creating a culture of kindness in a variety of ways. Each morning, over the announcements Principal Blum encourages students to be kind and provides an example each day of how they can be kind. She also recites a quote regarding kindness. Students are not only hearing about kindness but they are watching it being modeled by their teachers. Guidance Counselor Shonda Raiford stated “when we show our students what it looks like and sounds like to be kind, then there is a far greater chance that students will repeat the modeled behaviors”. Kindness is also being expressed through art projects at Douglas. Art teacher, Michele Wilson has incorporated a kindness wall mural in which all students became the “I” in kind. The mural was created like a South Carolina license plate with the palmetto tree and crescent moon. Pictures were taken of all faculty and students and are displayed by the mural. Kindness is a powerful tool and it is nurturing the well-being of everyone at DES.
