DES Had a Polar Express Night

Teachers and Students participating in Polar Express Night ActivitiesDouglas Elementary School recently hosted a Polar Express Family Night.  The evening began with hotdogs, chips and a drink. For dessert, sugar cookies were independently decorated with icing and sprinkles. After the meal, students were grouped according to age as Teachers read The Polar Express to them. Teachers also used this time to present reading strategies for parents to use in the home when they read to their children. According to the US Department of Education, “Children who are read to at home enjoy a substantial advantage over children who are not.”  Parents and students then made a jingle bell bead necklace together by using informational text strategies to decipher the necklace instructions. After they completed their craft, parents and students enjoyed hot chocolate and popcorn as they watched The Polar Express movie.  DES believes strongly in hosting community events because it not only improves school relations but also positively impacts academic achievement
