Douglas Elementary students learned about freedom quilts during the first week of Black History Month.  The DES literacy coach, Terrie Yonce, read the story Show Way to all students. She also brought in quilts that depicted the same patterns referenced in the story. In the story, the patterns were used to relay secret messages that were maps to freedom. Teachers were provided with lesson plans and extension activities in order to provide further insight into the central message or lesson of the story. The extension activities allowed students to express their own family values, beliefs and how it has shaped their culture.
