Writing makes our thinking and learning more visible and permanent. Mrs. Smith’s third grade class at Douglas Elementary School recently wrote their own nonfiction book. Students began the process by choosing their favorite animal and conducting research using databases from SC Discus. They learned how to evaluate sources to determine credibility and then took notes in a research notebook using Google slides. Then they compiled all their information to a rough draft. Finally, they organized everything into the final book. Their book included their research information along with a table of contents, illustrations, references, index and a glossary. Once their book was completed, they read their books to each other.
