DES School Year Opens With New Friendly Faces

It is with great pleasure to welcome six new faculty and staff members to Douglas Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year.  Lisa Turner is the new school nurse. She is a native of Edgefield and a graduate of Strom Thurmond High School and Piedmont Technical College. She worked for the Edgefield County Hospital for over 25 years. Mrs. Turner stated, “I am looking forward to providing health and nursing services here at DES.”

Colby Strickland is a resource teacher.  She graduated from Saluda High School and Lander University with a degree in Special Education. She taught resource at Saluda Middle School for the past six years. Mrs. Strickland said, “This is going to be a tremendous school year and I am excited to be a part of DES.”

Melissa Mims is rejoining DES as a special education teacher. She has been working for Edgefield County Schools since 1999. She graduated from College of Charleston with a degree in Special Education and obtained her Master’s degree from Columbia College in Education. Melissa has been at Douglas Elementary for most of her career and she is delighted to be back "home".

Ashley Richards is a third grade teacher. She graduated from Greenbrier High School and University of South Carolina with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She has been teaching for eight years and absolutely loves her job. Mrs. Richards is looking forward to a DES year filled with fun, lots of learning and new adventures.

Wendy Schilling is a special education teacher. She graduated from Columbia College with a BA degree in Special Education and another BA degree in Psychology from University of South Carolina. She also obtained her Master’s degree from University of South Carolina in Special Education. She brings vast experience to DES with over 20 years of teaching special education within a variety of age groups and categories.

Amy Munford is a third grade teacher. Although she is new to Douglas, she is not new in the classroom for she is entering into her 22nd year of teaching. She is a graduate of Augusta State University with a degree in Education. Mrs. Munford said, “I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of this community and look forward to a wonderful school year.”
